This is our short SELF-GUIDED TOUR along the breathtaking east coast of Tasmania.

It's the 'classic' tourist route, cycling through more or less flat country with many lovely, empty white beaches and a mild, dry and sunny climate. Its almost flat on most parts, but also contains some undulating sections.

Accommodation categories

Comfort: Comfortable feel-well properties, all rooms with shower/toilet (few exceptions).
Executive: Usually the best available accommodation in the given area, some with spa.
Economy: Nothing fancy, but good value for money, mostly with shower/toilet.
Budget: Quite basic, but you always have your own room. Usually shared facilities.
Hostel: You share your bedroom with others, usually dorm, shared facilities.
Please note: your chosen category will be substituted when not available!

Tour itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

You need to make your own way to St. Helens. There are buses from the Launceston transit centre: They leave Mon-Fr at 12.30 pm (during school terms only) and 4.00 pm, Saturday 4.00 am (during school terms only) and Sunday 7.30 pm. It costs $31.50. and needs 2 1/2 hours. You can use the airport shuttle to get from the airport to transit center ($ 14 pp). Please allow 90 minutes from touchdown.
Your hotel is just around the corner from the bus stop. If booked, your rental bike(s) will be waiting for you at the first night's accommodation.

Day 2, St. Helens

Today you can explore the beautiful surroundings, like the tourist icons Bay of Fires and Binalong Bay. Or you cycle inland to the farming community of Pyangana where you can do cheese tasting in the local cheese factory and do an excursions to the famous St Columba Falls (Tasmanias second highest waterfalls).

Day 3, St. Helens – Bicheno:

Today you cycle down the beautiful and mostly flat east coast, passing spectacular beaches along the way. Just before your destination Bicheno we visit the award-winning “Nature World Animal Park”, where you can at 3.30 pm watch the feeding of tasmanian devils and maybe even pet one. 77 km

Day 4, Bicheno - Swansea

First, you cycle 46 km on the flat to the reknowned Freycinet National Park, where you can walk to the famous Wineglass Bay Lookout (the beach is rated as one of the 10 most beautiful in the world). On the afternoon you can cross the Moulting Lagoon on a tiny boat ($ 20), followed by a bike ride directly on the 9 Mile Beach! Note: The boat service is not operating in high winds or rain. In this case you have to cycle addtional 40 km over hilly terrain. 51 km on the lagoon route

Day 5, Swansea - Orford

The ride on this coast road is an absolute pleasure. After about 30 km the road turns away from the coast and leads through farming country. En route is Triabunna with its small cute harbour. There is enough time to have a stroll on nearby spring beach. Cycling: 62 km

Day 6, Orford - Hobart

In the morning there is enough time to explore the surroundings. Than you drop off the rental bike at the accommodation and take the bus to Tamania´s capital Hobart at 2.15 pm for $ 16.10 (Wednesdays and Fridays only). On any other day you have to take a taxi ($ 150).

Day 7, departure

After breakfast this tour comes to its end. To can get to the airport by taxi or by the so called airporter bus service.
